Well, I have an Apoc tactical longsword. It works very nicely. Pretty inexpensive, very good quality. I prefer the long sword because it pretty much does it all. Cut, thrust, reach, cqb. I would say the Long sword would be akin to a 1911, or FN- FAL in firearm terms.
We can't buy Apoc brand stuff (or anything like it in) the UK, but I've seen some reviews on YT and they look very useful. I was thinking of how you'd use a longsword indoors but I guess you can half-sword it when you need to.
I did like the comparison to the 1911 & FAL. Big, functional, not too subtle. I heard that a lot of British soldiers were sad to give up their FAL for the SA80.
I've wielded a katana for Iaido, and it was light as a feather loved it. I've still got the katana, but am looking to re-enlist for lessons in the coming days if I can.
As to getting a long sword can I ask how you got your mitts on it Donn? Might have to look into getting myself one also.
I bought the one in the pic back in 1998, a friend made it. He is now passed on. I know a couple of smiths. Currently, I would recommend Kult of Athena, if you were looking. Museum Replicas is also decent. For a modern version Apocalypse makes a “tactical” longsword that is shockingly decent for the price.

Okay I’ll note it down, I also prefer my swords unsharpened in the iaito style as I fear cutting myself (I’m clumsy by nature).
You can get Blunts as well, I own one myself. Used to do live steel fencing, blunt long sword, and Mail, etc. sharps are not to be played with.
