In 1981 I discovered a Thin Lizzy album, Black Rose a Rock Legend.
It was my introduction to Gary Moore, my favorite, and most influential guitar hero.
The second introduction was to Dark Rosaleen.
Referenced by Phil Lynott in his amazing lyrics for the song Black Rose.
That is where I first learned of the beautiful traditional song, Roisin Dubh, Dark Rosaleen.
The song was a cry of love and hope during the dark era of the early 1600’s in Ireland.
A song of resistance against the English invaders amidst the final end of Traditional Native Irish Kings and Chieftains.
Written by either Red Hugh O’Domnhaille or one of his court Bards.
The little Black Rose, is an traditional symbol of Ireland, the Goddess Erin, whom the Emerald Isle is named for.
My interpretation uses the Original traditional Lyrics in English, I did not alter them in any way.
The music is a mix of traditional Celtic lap Harp, and modern instruments. It is a modern arrangement in A minor.
This is NOT a cover of the Thin Lizzy song in any way.
Though there are a few nods to Gary Moore.
I have been obsessed with Dark Rosaleen since 1981.
In the late spring of 1985, I was standing on the out doors Balcony of the Fort Lauderdale Library, over looking down town Fort Lauderdale, smoking a joint with my friend Kim when my friend Joy ( a beautiful read haired lady, that is and was very special. She in fact helped me acquire an awesome 1973 Gibson Explorer, #168) brought out a book of Irish poetry, and showed me the Original verse, Dark Rosaleen. I swore then and there that I was going to one day do a cover of the song.
It took 40 years to get it done.
Here it is at last.
