For the materialist,
Once a position is reached where there is a sense of total security, ie, food, shelter, health, physical safety, there is nothing else to strive for save power.
Once power is achieved, there is nothing left other than ego which requires affirmation which is expressed as exercise of power.
The only way the powerful can confirm their power/ego, is by having their will/ego obeyed. That requires issuing a command and then watching the insects scurry.
Conversely, once the big thing is built, once the command has been obeyed, a bigger thing must be built, because another narcissistic delusion has been challenged, another command issued, in order to uphold the delusions of ego.
It's the serpent eating it's tail.
It's why empires fail.
Thus, Absolute power brings absolute destruction.
Another aspect about power;
Power is an illusion.
Kings do not carry out their commands.
It is people that enable it. It is people that obey, choose to follow orders.
The King only has “power”
So long as people choose to empower, enable, and otherwise give it to him.
Power is a delusion.
Power is a narcissistic delusion enabled by a narcissist’s flying monkeys and the willingness of the narcissist’s victim to tolerate the abuse.
There's my take on it.
